Mattress Sizes in Canada, What Are Your Options?

Canadians just like to be a little different.

From the loonie, to the metric system our neighbors up north like to have things their way.

That is why it is no surprise that mattress sizes in Canada are also a little different as well.

Getting the right sized mattress is important for the quality of sleep you get. I encountered these same problems when I moved in with my girlfriend.

We are both slim people, but our bed frame was not the standard size bed. We were planning a remodel, which would give us a regular-sized queen, but that was months away. Yes, we bought a mattress that was too big.

The remodeled and rebuilt bed gave us the frame to fit the mattress we bought. We slept on it, hanging over the edges of the old frame until then.

The mattress was a good quality mattress, so there was no damage, but I am glad those times are behind us.

So in this article, we look at the common question, what mattress sizes are available in Canada?

Mattress sizes in Canada are similar to those in the US, but here we have changed to the metric system.

Crib Mattress

A crib-sized mattress is made for infants or babies and measures with a maximum height of 68.6 cm and a width of 132 cm.

Small Single Bend

A small single mattress is made for one person, often a young child. The maximum height of the mattress is 191 cm, with a maximum width of 99 cm. A small mattress is a good transition mattress for a growing child.

Twin Mattress

A twin-sized mattress fits one person with the average length being 191 cm and width measuring 99 cm. It does not take up much room and can get used up through the time when the child goes to college as it is compact enough to fit the small college dorm room mattress. The only problem with this mattress is if the child grows extremely tall. They will stop fitting the mattress so well then.

Twin XL

A Twin XL is a good option if you need or want a larger twin. The mattress measures 191 cm long with 106 cm of width. The mattress is very similar to the regular twin it is just built for the taller person.

Full-sized or Double mattress

A double or full-sized mattress is one that measures 137 cm wide by 190 cm long. The mattress can come in larger sizes as it was once a mattress meant for two people to sleep. It is now a popular choice for crowded rooms or teenagers that don’t want to sleep in a twin anymore.

Full or Double XL Mattress

A full or double XL Mattress is one measuring 137 cm wide with a length of 192 cm. The double size is longer to accommodate the taller sleeper and provide more comfort when sleeping.

Double Extra Long

A double extra-long mattress is ideal for the taller teenager, with it being 135.5 cm long and 202 cm long.

Queen Mattress

The queen-sized mattress came in during the 1950s as a way to get space between sleeping couples. The mattresses are 152 cm wide and 203 cm long. The queen-sized mattress is the most popular on the market for two people to sleep comfortably.

RV Queen

For the countrywide and multi-country travelers, an RV queen mattress is a way to go. It is almost the same as a regular queen, except the dimensions fit the typical Queen RV sized bed instead of the regular queen-sized. The dimensions of the RV queen are 152.5 cm wide by 189 cm long. The regular-sized queen is 202 cm long, making the RV queen 11 cm shorter to fit a more confined space.

King Mattress

The king-sized mattress is common for larger couples or couples that end up with their children in bed with them sometimes. The bed measures 193 cm wide and 203 cm long.

Gone are the days of just buying a mattress. With the advent of new technology, there are many different types of mattresses you can buy. These the most common types of mattresses in Canada:

Innerspring Mattresses

The traditional mattress for more than 100 years, the innerspring mattress has seen improvement for support and longevity, which have kept it on the market for decades.

Memory Foam Mattress

The memory foam mattress has seen development and modification for over 50 years. The comfort and dependability of them as steadily increased today’s quality. The bed is now made of high-density foam that supports while controlling body heat.

Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The gel memory foam mattress is one of the latest versions of it to end up on the market. The gel temperature controls the sleeper while the memory foam cushions and cradles the sleeper. The gel is mixed with levels of support and cushioning foam.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses are more rubbery to provide support with foam and the flexibility of rubber. Their main draw is providing the sleeper with ways to adjust spinal alignment and support.

Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress is one where the inner levels of foam and cushion lay on top of the traditional innerspring of the mattress. This type of mattress provides support and cushion while cradling the human body.

Final Thoughts

Not all sizes of the mattress are available from all the manufacturers. There are styles more popular and easy to mass-produce such as the twin, queen, and king sizes.

Whichever mattress you decide to choose, it should fit your life later as well as right now.
